The Consequences of Crossing the Border

by Stephen Brown

NEW YORK-When Bruno Martinez decided to leave his small community in Mexico and head to the United States crossing the border wasn't that hard. It was 1992 and he was 17. "There were two lanes at the checkpoint," Martinez recalled, "one for trucks and one for cars. It was really early in the morning. We simply crossed in between the two lanes with jackets over our heads. The guards were attending to people."

When he made the crossing in 2008 it was much more of a challenge.

Dr. Bailey presented the opportunity as one to be an AmeriCorps ACCESS project Professional Corps member, which would afford Dr. Villalba a chance to work with like-minded UNCG colleagues and members of the local community. Dr. Villalba, viewing membership in the Professional Corps as a great way to network and learn from others with similar research interests, agreed.

Professional Corps Member Profile: Gale Greenlee & Glenwood Library

In the 1990’s, with the influx of immigrants and refugees to North Carolina, Guilford County became one of many areas in desperate need of outreach projects. The City of Greensboro introduced Glenwood Library as the community’s “multicultural library,” and charged it with stocking its shelves with multilingual reading materials, and providing culturally competent resources and programs. The formation and collaboration between the AmeriCorps ACCESS project and Glenwood Library in the mid-90’s played a crucial role in meeting the needs of our growing community.

Summer Salsa Sizzle: A Taste of Local Culture

Despite high temperatures ranging in the mid 90s, the Guilford County Cooperative Extension along with UNCG’s Center for New North Carolinians drew a diverse crowd of all ages to the 2nd annual Summer Salsa Sizzle. Although salsa was a central component of the day –salsa dancing, salsa cooking, salsa tasting, and salsa judging– the significance of the day was much greater.

The event, held at the Guilford County Agricultural Center, was a local celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
